J. Blake Hunter is an Associate at Butler Pappas. He is a graduate of Florida State University College of Law (Juris Doctorate, 2002). While he was a student at the Florida State College of Law, he was a member of the Environmental Law Journal. He is a graduate of Furman University (Bachelor of Arts in History, 1999) in Greenville, South Carolina. While a student at Furman University, he performed community service including reading with elementary school students and coordinating the May Day Play Day for local students. Further, he was a sports reporter for his college newspaper, a member of the pre-law society, a member of the Lutheran Student Association, and he had his own radio show.
Blake was admitted to practice law in Florida in September 2002. He is admitted to practice before all state and federal (trial and federal) courts in Florida. Blake has extensive experience in health care law. Prior to becoming an associate with Butler Pappas, Blake spent five years with the Florida Department of Health prosecuting physicians, nurses, and physical therapists for licensure disciplinary issues. Blake was the lead prosecutor and has appeared before the Boards of Osteopathic Medicine and Physical Therapy. He has extensive experience litigating administrative law cases before Florida's Division of Administrative Hearings. Subsequently, Blake was an Assistant Attorney General with the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit where he litigated complex civil multi-state cases against pharmaceutical companies and physicians for violations of the Anti-Kickback statute, Stark Laws, and FDA violations. While an attorney with the Medicaid Fraud Unit for five years, the unit recovered over $250 million dollars for the citizens of Florida. Blake was also the discovery team leader for a multi-state complex civil litigation case involving 36 states and the federal government against Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Inc., which is currently pending before the Federal District Court for Massachusetts. Blake also spent two years as an associate attorney with The Mang Law Firm, P.A., a Tallahassee based insurance defense and regulatory firm in Tallahassee.
Currently, Blake's practice includes medical malpractice defense, construction defect defense, and he provides insurance coverage opinions to insurance companies.
Blake is a member of the Health Law Society of the Florida Bar. He has lectured before the National Association of Attorney's Generals and the National Association of Medical Fraud Control Units regarding issues involving e-discovery, including the national meeting in Seattle, Washington in 2011. He was awarded the Davis Productivity Award as an outstanding employee for the state of Florida while he was employed as an Assistant Attorney General.
