I am a double Gator, having gotten my degree in history and law degree from the University of Florida. I was raised in Southwest Florida and returned here to build my law practice with my partners Jimmy and Rene. I love to read, fish and play golf. However, corny as it may sound, I really love my job and trial litigation best. I went to law school to be a trial lawyer and then ended up doing corporate work out of school. In 2002 I remembered what it was I really had a passion for and I returned to Florida and became an Assistant Public Defender in Fort Myers. This was a wonderful experience; to learn real law in the trenches and to try a lot of cases. After around two years as a PD, I left for private practice as an associate in a firm in Fort Myers. I built a practice for that firm in Charlotte County and then, when I felt ready to be on my own, I left that firm in 2006 to join up with my partners and form Brown, Suarez & Rios, P.A. I am proud of the fact that we are a litigation firm and that we have a great team of lawyers who are not afraid to go to trial; whether it be an injury case or a criminal case. That type of aggressiveness and hard work also leads to many negotiated settlements that are favorable to our clients, because we have earned the respect of our opponents. Our lawyers and wonderful support staff work together on every client's case and make this law frim a fun place to come to work. We have successfully represented so many people in Southwest Florida that I am proud to say that the majority of our business comes from prior clients and other members of the legal and business community. I started out practicing corporate law and then returned to Southwest Florida in 2002 and began practicing exclusively criminal defense at the trial and appellate level. I have successfully represented thousands of accused individuals in State in Federal Court at both the trial and appellate level. Much of my practice has dealt with fourth amendment issues involving the suppression of illegally seized evidence and statements. I have tried close to 100 cases and am a partner in my firm.
I began working on personal injury cases with other attorneys in my firm four years ago. I have steadily began to devote more of my practice to this area in the last year. We are not a personal injury "mill". We take select cases involving people who have truly been wronged and injured. I believe that my litigation experience and that of our other attorneys sets us apart from most PI firms; firms that have no intention of going to trial if they cannot get a quick settlement from an insurer.
I take a select few criminal appeals each year. I find my extensive work as trial counsel gives me a unique perspective on reviewing trials conducted by others and looking for error. I have successfully handled numerous appeals, including petitions for extraordinary relief, including habeas corpus petitions, alleging illegal imprisonment. We limit the amount of appeals we take to one or two at a time, to devote maximum attention to this complex area of litigation.
