Samuel (“Sam”) B. Kanupp is a Board Certified Specialist by the Florida Bar in the area of Labor and Employment law. Mr. Kanupp graduated cum laude from the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clark School of Law in Washington, D.C. in 2008, where he was named to the Dean’s List and served as Senior Editor of the Law Review. Mr. Kanupp became interested in pursuing a civil rights practice early in his law school career.
With a particular interest in employment discrimination, Mr. Kanupp furthered his interest and education as a result of his placement with the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under the Law, Employment Discrimination Project. The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law was created at the request of President John F. Kennedy in 1963 when he urged a group of lawyers to use their training and influence to move the struggle for the protection of civil rights from the streets to the courts.
During Mr. Kanupp’s internship with the Lawyer’s Committee, the United States Supreme Court handed down its decision in Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, Inc. severely limiting the right of employees to bring discrimination claims as a result of unequal pay practices. Mr. Kanupp was provided the unique opportunity to assist the Committee with in depth research and analysis on the case which was ultimately used in the Committee’s efforts to lobby Congress in the successful bid to pass the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act reinstating prior law that provided an effective remedy for unequal pay based on discrimination.
Mr. Kanupp was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, where he graduated from Stanton College Preparatory School. He subsequently attended Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science.
Mr. Kanupp has been an associate with the Law Offices Archibald J. Thomas, III, P.A., since February 2010. Mr. Kanupp is admitted to practice in all Florida courts, the United States District Court for the Northern and Middle Districts of Florida, and the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. Mr. Kanupp limits his practice to the representation of employees in cases involving all aspects of labor and employment law. His experience includes representing employees in cases involving sexual harassment and discrimination based on gender, pregnancy, age, race, national origin, disability, and religion. He also has experience representing employees in cases involving family and medical leave, unpaid wages, and overtime claims under the FLSA, covenants not to compete, trade secrets, employment contracts, whistle-blower retaliation, FMLA retaliation and interference, workers’ compensation retaliation, and other aspects of labor and employment law, including federal sector EEO cases as well as unemployment compensation hearings and appeals.
Mr. Kanupp is a member of the Florida Bar and the National Employment Lawyers Association.
