Contract Labor - no contract no receipt

We hired a guy to pour a concrete slab for us. Small job, 300 sq ft. He quoted us $1100, paid in cash day of job so he can pay ''the guys''. I failed to ask for a receipt.

Received a certified letter from a company I've never heard of seeking to collect unpaid charges of $2400 for concrete work at my residence. They are threatening to put a lein on the property if we don't pay. I didn't contract with this company. But I don't have any documentation, nor a receipt from the guy I did verbally contract with and paid for the job. Do I have to pay this $2400 to this unknown company or should I fight this?

Re: Contract Labor - no contract no receipt

Pay it. Then go after the guy you contracted with for the $1300 difference.

Next time, know who the subs are and get receipts and waivers of lien.
