What are the laws in California
concerning a person�s estate when
someone dies? If a family member
lets say a father has an extended
stay in a hospital before he died
would the sun or his family be
responsible for the bill?

Not unless the Son or Family agreed to pay the bills at some point. However, the estate of the father would most likely be required to pay the bills before distributing any assets to the family. So if your Father owned anything at his death, that would most likely be used to satisfy the debt.
