impounded car

We had permission from a friend to store a car on his property. The car was there for approx. 1 year when he decided, without contacting us, to give it away without any paperwork. A person took the car and took parts off of it, parked it on the street in front of his house and then called the towing company to come and get it. The first we heard that the car was even moved was when we recieved the notice in the mail that the car had been impounded. Now the company is trying to charge us the towing and storage fees. What can we do?

Re: impounded car

I think the first thing that you should do is contact the police and have them write up a report that describes how your auto was converted by your friend. Obviously one cannot own a vehicle unless the auto is signed over, this was never done because the towing co knew the auto was yours and charged you accordingly
