Inspector check off
In Dec 2007, we had our 2 furnace installations checked off and approved by the County inspector. Now with our recent final inspection, a different inspector rejected our furnaces installation due to safety code. My question is who is responsible or liable for getting the furnaces and the furnace rooms back into code? Contractor, HVAC sub-contractor, or the County inspector. As a homeowner, we feel that if there is a safety code violation, the county inspector should not have approve of the installations.

Somehow two copies of this question got posted. I answered one of them, but I'll use this second version to supplement my answer.
I recommended going after the prime contractor, because that's the party you're in contract with, but there's certainly no harm in contacting the HVAC sub directly, particularly if you have a working relationship with them, to inquuire their supposedly "expert opinion" on why their work failed to pass the second inspection. Sometimes they will fix their mistakes without pressure from the prime contractor.

You'll never pin any responsibility on the county. As between the two contractors, if you selected, hired and signed papers with the prime, then the prime went out and retained the HVAC subcontractor, you should deal with the prime. Your remedy is to go after the party with whom you're directly in contract.
