School emergency expulsion

My son was at a school with some friends when a fight broke out, he pulled some of the kids out of the fight and tried to stop it. Apparently it was a mob type thing, which teen boys do tend to get involved in. My son never threw a single punch, but the school is saying he didnt do enough to stop the fight, and has been expelled. Is this legal? My son was trying to do the right thing, and now is being denied his education. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: School emergency expulsion

Your son didn't have a duty to intervene and try and stop the fight--assuming that he was just a passerby or bystander. It may be different if he was an original party to the dispute. School boards are required to have a hearing in the case of an expulsion.
