does the will for widows need to specify that the children are from the marriage or not?

It's always best to be as descriptive as possible with respect to relationships and children of prior marriages, etc. The answer to your question is 'yes' to avoid any possible incorrect interpretation of the Will after death. Although I'd like to know more about why you're asking the question;. Please don't use the "do it yourself" method; it's so inexpensive to have a Will drafted.
