I have tried countless time to make payment arrangements on a local tax which I owe. The agency will not negotiate with me at all. The original debt was $1600. The agency tacked on any additional $1900 in fees and interest. They will only allow 18 months to pay off the debt. I have a small court appointment on Monday. The debt is in my husband's name and not mine. He was unable to attend the first court date because of being hospitalized. We tried rescheduling the next one but the agency refused to accept another continuance. My husband has a mandatory meeting at work on the 9th. The agency is the Regional Income Tax Agency in Ohio. We are considering taking a home equity loan to pay off them completely. We are in the process of paying off credit cards in a debt management program. The agent on the phone from RITA also mentioned putting a lien against our home. She harassed me really bad.
If you file bankruptcy, it stays ALL collection efforts.
