I asked my landlord to break my lease because I am relocating (not military). She was okay with it as long as I understood that she would attempt to rent the property and I would pay rent until it was occupied. I'm ok with that part; however, I left sone things in the property and she told me that I am no longer allowed back into the property because I am no longer under lease since I provided notice. I wanted to get something in September from there and she told me to throw my key away and not to enter the property even though I paid September rent. Is that legal? Can she deny me access to the property even though I already paid and am still paying? I'm in Virginia.

Sure, she can deny your entry to the property but that's no reason for refusing to return

your property that you left there. Tell this landlord that if she continues to refuse to allow the

return of your property, you'll have to consider filing what's called a Warrant in

Detinue against her in the local general district court in order to secure its return.
