I work for a small company that situated on acreage leased from the federal government (unrelated to the feds). We know something about the history of land in that it was used for ammunition storage during WWII and all the bunkers still stand. In the last three years two people from my company have been diagnosed with terminal brain tumors. We, the employees, are interested in having soil samples professionally analyzed for cancer-causing and other contaminants. Do we have to have the federal government's permission before proceeding? If we had the sampling done ourselves without notifying the federal government or our company, would we be breaking the law? What if our company fired us for doing so?
There is nothing illegal about taking soil samples and having them analyzed. Your employer can fire at will unless you are civil service or have an employment contract.
