Currently out of work, school I work for closed due to Coronavirus. Seriously thinking of applying for unemployment since we are not getting paid more than a week while closed down. I have heard from many that applying for any state help( link, unemployment) would get my application for a green card rejected in the future as it makes me a burden of the state. I have a 2 year old daughter and would love anything that clarifies if I am okay to apply for unemployment without risk of not being able to become a citizen in years to come.
U/E benefit is not part of public charge.
No, applying for unemployment insurance will not affect your green card application.
Collecting unemployment does not subject you to the public charge rule. Please see https://www.avvo.com/legal-guides/ugc/public-charge-rule-is-expanded-how-does-this-affect-you-
Unemployment payments are an INSURANCE program ... not a public benefit.
Go ahead and apply ... you qualify, as long as your EAD hasn't expired.
