Brett Szematowicz is originally from Chicago, Illinois, and moved to Tampa when he was in elementary school. He attended high school locally at Tampa Preparatory School and graduated in 1999. Mr. Szematowicz attended college at The American University in Washington, D.C. and graduated with a B.A. in Justice.
While attending law school at South Texas College of Law, Mr. Szematowicz interned with a highly-respected federal judge in the Florida Middle District and the Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office.
After law school, Mr. Szematowicz served the State of Florida as an Assistant State Attorney in the Sixth Judicial Circuit for nearly four years. Mr. Szematowicz brought over 75 jury trials to verdict, ranging from second degree misdemeanors to first degree felonies. As a prosecutor, Mr. Szematowicz had the honor to serve as Lead Trial Attorney in Misdemeanor Division H, North County traffic attorney, local ordinance violations attorney, misdemeanor and felony domestic violence attorney, a member of the DUI Manslaughter squad and felony child abuse attorney. By the time he left the office, Mr. Szematowicz had cases ranging from 1st degree murder to kidnapping.
After leaving the State Attorney’s Office, Mr. Szematowicz worked as an associate for a year-and-a-half in the Tampa Bay area. Mr. Szematowicz practiced in the areas of insurance defense for sinkhole, water-loss, theft and arson claims.
