Dr. Steven D. Brownlee’s professional career spans ten years in a variety of fields including the practice of medicine in Pittsburgh, PA, medical management consulting, and the practice of law with a concentration in healthcare. Steven’s prior experience and training as a physician and medical management consultant makes him ideally suited as a healthcare attorney.
Steven's experiences in medicine and business convinced him that many of today’s healthcare problems are created by the clash of regulations, patient care, and economics. Physicians are not as free as they once were to focus exclusively on the patient. The dynamic forces of government regulation (state and federal) and economics create complex legal issues requiring the services of specialized attorneys able to maneuver between the many layers of federal and state government. The administrative bodies involved in the modern healthcare practice require the services of skilled legal counsel.
Steven’s education and work experience makes him ideally suited to assist all healthcare professionals in the areas of professional licensing, Medicare/Medicaid issues, DEA issues, medical management, medical malpractice, physician contracts, and virtually all issues facing the modern healthcare professional. Steven’s knowledge of medical diagnosis and treatment combined with his legal expertise make him a formidable advocate for his clients.
Steven is multi-dimensional and has interests outside of healthcare law; he is also an avid outdoorsman. He successfully completed the Hurricane Island adventure, a grueling ten day sailing expedition from Miami to Key West and back. The team completed the journey without modern electronic equipment and obtained their food from the surrounding environment. Steven recently returned from a salmon and trout fishing expedition in Talkeetna, Alaska.
Following his undergraduate education at The Pennsylvania State University (B.S. Biology, 1994), Steven attended medical school at Temple University (M.D., 1999). He completed an internal medicine internship at The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Mercy Hospital. His patient care experience involved inpatient, outpatient, surgical and emergency settings. Although a skilled resident physician, Steven turned down offers from radiology programs to pursue his interest in healthcare policy and administration by seeking graduate business education at the prestigious Carnegie Mellon University (M.B.A., 2002).As a management consultant for corporations and small businesses, Steven helped clinics, health systems, physician practices and pharmaceutical companies with their operational, financial, IT and strategy needs. Steven frequently gave professional presentations including keynote speaking engagements at Virtua Healthcare (south New Jersey), Sentara Healthcare (southeastern Virginia/ northeastern North Carolina), H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute (Tampa, Florida) and General Electric’s Executive Training Center (Crotonville, New York).
Steven attended Stetson University College of Law (J.D., 2012) on an academic scholarship. During his legal education he re-established and served as president of the Health Law Student Association. Steven was an inaugural recipient of the Riverview High School (Oakmont, Pennsylvania) Distinguished Alumni Award (2010) and was awarded The E. Harris Drew Award for excellence in legal advocacy from Stetson University College of Law.
Throughout Steven’s career he worked with healthcare professionals and is continually impressed with the commitment, dedication and sacrifices that healthcare professionals make on a daily basis. Steven puts forth the same commitment, dedication and sacrifice into the practice of law defending the rights of healthcare professionals. Steven’s primary practice is in the areas of professional licensing, physicians’ contracts, medical malpractice defense, and all issues relating to healthcare.
