Can my employer force its employees to use their sick time and their vacation time, to get paid, while the business is closed, due to coronavirus concerns. This is an non union job, in an at will employment state (Michigan) Some full time employees have available sick/vacation time. Part time employees have little sick/vacation time. New employees have none. My employer claims that employees, with little or no sick/vacation time, will be compensated, but they have not informed us how. We would like to, at least, retain our vacation time. Any help with this inquiry, would be greatly appreciated.
This is very hard to answer because the situation is changing so rapidly. both federal and state laws are changing rapidly with the bailout bills. However without a change in the law your employer can probably charge your time against sick and vacation time or give you unpaid leave -- if you cannot work from home.
