Rights as an Independent Contractor

I work as a dancer for an entertainment company that specializes in Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. There has never been any signed paperwork, but I consider myself to be an independent contractor. My ''boss'' has recently decided that he will ''terminate'' a dancer's ''employment'' if we choose to work for another Bar/Bat Mitzvah company. He has also claimed us as ''his'' dancers and wants to charge other companies a fee if they would like to hire us. Keep in mind that he did not set up the relationship between the dancers and these other companies, we've had contact with them on our own. He claims it's a conflict of interest and a matter of ethics. Can he do these things? What are my legal rights?

Distributing a Release

I will be compiling a book of short blurbs on the types of secrets that women keep from men (in the vein of the ''Chicken Soup'' series). This is an independent project totally funded by me. Do I need people to sign a release before I accept their submissions (via the web) so that I can use their short blurb? If so, what type of release should I have and what kind of information should be included in the release? Also, since I will have people submit their blurbs electronically via a web site, would it be sufficient to have the individual click a checkbox (an electronic signature of sorts) stating ''I agree to this release'' or something similar, or would this be something that requires an actual written signature?

Producing a Charitable Event: What are My Options?

I have pitched an idea for a charitable sporting event that is being considering by a professional sports team in the Boston area. As the originator of the idea, am I entitled to compensation for the idea when moving into contract negotiations or am I less likely to gain compensation considering that this event is being produced for charity. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Option on a film

I am trying to get out of a contract. I optioned my screenplay to be produced by an indie film company. I was also deemed as co-producer. I now want to get out of the contract. It's for two years. I was never paid anything for it, not even $1.00. The contract says that I still own it until they raise money for it which they're not currently doing or will ever do at this point. I've asked for a dissolution and they're asking me to sign it guaranteeing them a certain (high) percentage if it goes to the market for 'sale'. The contract also says that both parties need to sign off on the dissolution. They're refusing to do it, yet also refusing to push the project ahead. Can I sell it on my own since I am still the owner? Do I have any legal rights? Do they? The contract also says that no party may assign any of its rights or obligations without prior written consent of the other party and if it's attempted, it's deemed null and void. Someone told me that because they didn't 'pay' me even $1.00 for it, there's a way for me to get out of it.

ill legal gambling

Ga. is a non-gabling state except for lottery. They allow amusement machines in C-stores that the winning are to be paid by merchandise not money. I have been playing these machines for years and not one time was I paid in merchandise always cash. I wrote the govenor about it and he directed me to another department that told me they did not know who governed the ill legal part they just made sure the machines were licensed. I have on several times tried to get the things removed even went and talked to a judge for our county only to have store busted for sale of alcohol on Sunday but nothing done about machines. If Ga. is a non-gambling state yet they allow this I feel they should have to pay for losses. Really I just want the machines gone, if their going to allow gambling let it be in a casino where Ga can profit from it, not someone over here on a visa. I am a compulsive gambler and I thought Ga. would a safe place to live only to find out there is more gambling going on here than in any casino.

I'm musician in a band. About 8 months ago our former band member had a friend design a logo for us. We've used this logo free uf charge for the last 8 months as the designer made the logo free of charge for us (as a friendly gesture to his buddy) We decided to get rid of this member in the band and now he has written us saying that his friend will be writing us a cease and desist letter because we own him a copyright payment for the logo. Is there a certain statue of limitations on graphic arts. We've been using this logo for some time with this individual's knowledge, under the pretences that it was designed as a friendly guesture for our former member? Our former member is clearly trying to sabatoge the band for spite. Thanks for your help.

Filming illegal Outdoor Sex in public for profit

Lets say I have a camera and I am walking along a trail in the california mountains. I see two people engaged in sex. I film them without them knowing. Can I use these images for my own gain? Please keep in mind, they are in a public place and could be arrested for what they are doing. Also, when a celebrity is filmed in public, I doubt they give the magazine permission for each photo they take. Thanks.
