I came up through the ranks in large law firms and worked as a tax lawyer at Texaco - but discovered I preferred helping people one on one. When I started my own law firm, I realized how meaningful my work could be - to me, and to people who need help addressing issues they face. Now I get to do what I think is best, both as a lawyer, and as a human being. Making house calls is a service I offer because I know how difficult life can be as people get older or have handicaps.
I have an extensive and diverse background in subjects related to estate planning including tax planning, employee benefits and entrepreneurship. I'm a tax lawyer by training so I have a skillset that is not often found in a small firm in Westchester County. Plus I'm also licensed to practice law in Florida for those who are snowbirds.
As a business lawyer, my team and I help people start businesses, sign leases, create partnership and business agreements, write employment contracts, handle employment law matters and draft complex business agreements. At Texaco I worked on international corporate tax financing, and my colleague, Jaqueline Johansen cut her teeth in the corporate practice group of a large law firm. We are adept at working through complicated agreements.
We work with people of all ages and marital status who want plans in place to protect their families and loved ones. A good deal of our practice is devoted to estate planning, including wills, powers of attorney and trusts of all types. Clients who are concerned about health issues as they age, often create asset protection or Medicaid trusts to preserve their wealth.
When it comes to elder law, I've been the position that many of my clients find themselves in: shepherding a parent through their golden years. I know what it's like when emotional and economic concerns meet. Because of my experience with my own parents, I've become a better lawyer.
We live in a "do it yourself" world, but as many people come to realize, DIY isn't as easy as it sounds. Although many web services, offer online agreements you can download and sign, often it's not that simple. For example, in all states a last will and testament must be signed in a certain way - usually in front of two witnesses, who have to be in the same room with the person signing the will. Often having a lawyer oversee a will signing is the best way to prove - if it's ever challenged - that things were done properly.
To help people navigate what they can do on their own - without hiring a lawyer - I've developed a line of legal self-help books - [www.reallifelegal.com]. This little books help people decide whether they can tackle something on their own - or whether they need a lawyer. They're like "Cliff's Notes" for the law - if you remember what that is.
We are avid pet lovers, and I volunteer my legal talents on behalf of the SPCA of Briarcliff Manor - to help those who want to leave a bequest to the SPCA, and also to help the SCPA collect legacies left to them. We afford those interested in making this type of gift special treatment. Although my dog works with me generally on Tuesdays and Thursdays, we often just love to walk at Croton Point Park - he likes to swim there too - but the closest I get is tossing a stick!
