Recently, I discovered a friend of mine in their 70's is no longer in possession of their family home of more than 50 years, and is in a residential nursing home, which they do not know who put them there or why.
We grew up together, but now live in different states. They live in upstate New York. In speaking with them over the phone, it is obvious they have mental challenges and their memory is minimal at best. Despite this however, because of our frequent contact over many years, they still remember me. My concern is that people may be taking advantage of them, but I do not know for sure. In speaking with the administrator of the facility to ask questions about how my friend ended up there, they indicated that the information was confidential, but they would pass my contact information on to the responsible party. The likelihood of my receiving a call back is anyones guess.
I do know this person has no living relatives, and I would like to know the name of the person who is acting as guardian over their affairs. There must be some way to find this out.
Laws and procedures vary from state to state, and so I would greatly appreciate any guidance from a knowledgeable person advising how to proceed under these circumstances. Thank you.
