I live in Lansing Michigan. Is it possible to be arrested for one thing - such as domestic assault - and then be charged for another - such as malicious destruction of a building under $200? That is what is going on with me.

Yes. Charges can always be added or amended if the prosecutor believes that the facts justify it. That's not unusual at all.
