Questions on

Education law

My question is: Is it possible to sue this corporation which has not paid me for some time?

I worked for my university's student government, which is a non-profit corporation.

I have yet to receive payment for my work from Nov 2014 to April 2015.

I have tried multiple times to reach the director, in various forms of communication and it was only after emailing the president of the university, have I received anything except one vague email that basically said "we'll see." Though another executive member is involved in his "CC" of emails, neither she has taken any steps to resolve this with me.

This game of avoiding me has gone on for four months now to no avail.

While I was in college, non-payment prevented me from buying basic necessities.

And recently, non-payment and lack of employer ID, etc, has almost cost me forfeiting my Covered CA medical insurance, as they could register someone who claimed to have had employment but did not have any information one would get from a W-2 form.

This out of the ordinary for me and I suspect it is retaliation which has to do with the director's passive-aggressiveness towards me.

May be relevant: Autumn

From the first day I won the overwhelming majority vote to appoint me to my position, I was physically threatened and told to "watch my back" from a VP student. After which, a large rumor circulated around the office by his girlfriend, saying that we had showered together, which is untrue. Because it reached me, I went to the director on my first week to tell him what has escalated. He said he'd have a talk with the VP student.

So right away, there was plenty of hostility towards me from the executive students the director worked closely with.

May be relevant: Spring

It was common knowledge in our office that the director had a thing for his secretary - an attractive busty young student my age - with whom I developed a friendship with due to personal tragedies. On our way out of the office one evening, he saw us walking and she remarked, "Oh no, now I'm going to get more text messages from him asking what I'm doing with you. I tell him that's none of his business." From around that point on, his demeanor changed.

May be relevant as well: Near Summer

The reason I quit student government is because I'd finally had enough when I was being treated unfairly. It was demanded that I go to governance meetings held on Fridays, under the threat of losing my job. I had a good reason not to: Fridays were typically days that I had military obligations with the USMC, of which I was an Officer Candidate at the time. It was possible for 2-3 others to go instead, but they simply didn't want to.

I emailed in my letter explaining what had happened to the director the night before we had to leave for weekend training at Camp Pendleton. I never got a response, nor my payments owed me, I was "removed from office" two weeks later as if I did something wrong, and it's been a struggle to even get acknowledgement ever since.

Therefore, is it possible to sue that student government corporation (or at least settle) for the outstanding monies owed me as well as to sue for the damages, such as nearly losing my medical insurance, and the emotional toll its taken on me?

My husband goes to a trade school that has been doing questionable things to several people. First he signed papers to start last November. He was busy getting his high school transcript (which that school offered no help), and called his school the Friday before classes started. They told him it was cancelled. He had no way of knowing, if he didn't call. Then he finally started in February. His first semester consisted of a horrible teacher who yelled, cursed, and argued with the class, no syllabus, no structured curriculum. Many of the information that was provided was in Spanish (husband is not spanish) and incorrect. When my husband would point out errors, they would simply say it was put there to see if they would catch it. He was there to learn, but instead had to sift through what was correct/incorrect, what was in English, and whether the teacher even had anything for them to do in those 5 hours. My husband talked to the teacher, nothing happened. He talked to the office, nothing happened. Finally, the next semester they gave the class a new teacher (they were supposed to stay with the same teacher). This teacher was much better, and the class had a lot of catching up to do because they didn't learn the things they were supposed to. On top of that, they finally got a syllabus, and learned that much of what the admissions representative had told them was false. They wouldn't be learning what they were led to believe they would. Uniforms finally came after 60% of the program has passed (automotive school ), and only after my husband talked to the president of the school. they promised them projects to work on, gave it to them after much on my husband's part, but then take it away with shady reasons. The teachers are getting frustrated with that fact too, because they need something to work on. They end up spending their own money, and the class is bringing in their own parts to work on. My husband just removed a 350 small block from an old truck owned by his mother, which has tons of sentimental value . she was all excited thinking the truck would finally be up and running. This was at the request of the teacher, because the motor was in line with what they needed to learn and they needed something physical to work on. He takes it to school after some significant effort, and the school denies it because it is not in the curriculum. the only thing that is in the curriculum, is in Spanish and is basic mechanics. My husband has all the ground work and was led to believe this would provide him the next level. The program is racing technology, and so far the teachers are carrying the lessons on their own with many interferences by the school. The office is very "back and forth" too. They say my husband owes $116 and he goes to pay, but it is only $39. We had it written in paper just in case they ask for the money later. To other people they were trying to use a new contract that the person didn't sign and charge them $2000 more. The never fixed it, so he left. Many people in the class have made huge sacrifices to be in it. One person came from Wisconsin, another lives 1 1/2 hours away, and my husband has a full time 3rd shift job that he had to get special permission to push his start time back to work with the school hours. he gets virtually no sleep, especially on days when he has to work extra. The class went from 9 to just 3 people. My husband is working too hard to get the school to give him a decent education, or the very least what was promised. we have taken out loan money, and pay monthly to the school. This isn't a free program, and he is definitely not getting what we thought would be worth the amount of money and sacrifice. The school is new and is based in Puerto Rico. Is there any legal grounds here?

Hello, We have had an issue with one of our school principals (and the vice principal), and the BOE. Here is the short version of the story. Fri, Aug 14th, a middle school student brings a gun to school and shows it to other kids. That night the parents of one of the kids who saw it called the principal to tell them. The principal did nothing, no calls to the police, no searching of the kids locker, until monday morning, after the kid arrived inside the school (not sure if he rides the bus or is driven to school). The gun in question was reported stolen a couple months ago by the step father of the child. After the kid was in the school and taken to the office was when the police were called (as I personally confirmed with the arresting officer). I think that is when the BOE was notified, but am unsure about that. Due to the principal not calling the police on friday night, or saturday, or sunday for that matter, the student had plenty of opportunity to use the gun. I am the parent of a student at that school. Sept 1st a story appears in the local paper, link is below, with some info, but mainly on what happened to the kid, which is another debacle in itself. As of today, Monday the 7th, there still has been no notification from the school or the school board, it was successfully covered up until the article. My main question is, is there legal responsibility for the Principal of a Public School (Huntington Middle in Houston County) to notify the police on suspicion of a gun at the school? I have much more information if you need it, I have spoken to most of the players, there are many of us organizing currently to get answers from the BOE, which remains silent with the exception of the little piece on the TV story linked below.

Thank You,

Aaron Drake

I took a class over the summer at a different college and filled out the proper financial aid for the summer to go toward that class. I thought the summer aid paid for the class because when the class started they had me fully registered and on the attendance roll. Now two years later a debt collector says I owe $508 dollars for the class I had taken. I contacted the school and they said I was expected to pay out of pocket as a transient student. I asked to see the their policies manual and it states "Registration is not complete until all tuition and fees have

been paid...Failure to fulfill financial obligations may result in denial of readmission, registration, certification of

attendance, transcripts, graduation, etc. Official transcripts will not be issued and graduation will be denied for

students whose accounts are delinquent. The College reserves the right to cancel a students registration for

non-payment at any time after the payment deadline." My registration should not have been completed by the university if the class was not paid for and it should have been canceled and I should have been dropped from the class until paid and re-registered with a late fee added. They say I have to pay because I attended the class but I only attended the class because my registration was complete and I was listed on attendance, if I was not of attendance then other steps would have been taken on my part and I would have called my initial school.Do you have to pay for a debt if the school neglected to follow their own policy and protocol? I feel that this can not be compared to a movie theater because a theater does not have the complex computer system with our personal and financial information as each university does compared to a one button system and I cannot control government aid I can only complete the proper paperwork. I have been automatically dropped from a system before when I attended a pricier school and had to take a student loan then re-register and pay a late fee. I should not have had the certification of attendance because of incomplete registration way before the class started, so therefore my name should not have been on the attendance roll sheet period because there is a fee payment deadline that has to be reach before classes start. I still don't understand, you can sneak into college like you can sneak into a movie because college has computer systems that every office (student account, registrar, and financial aid) has to access.
