Can i re-use an event name?

i worked for a company that sponsored an event (live music, food, drinks) and the actual event was given a pretty distinct name. the event was free but it was promoted on the radio and shirts were distributed with the name of the event on it. the company no longer wants to put on the event and i no longer work there. can i put on and promote a similar event under the same name but with a different organization?

Re: Can i re-use an event name?

Probably not. The name of the event likely belongs to the former employer. You might be able to negotiate a deal with the company for the use of the name... if they're truly not interested in any more.

The company already owns the trade-name/trademark for the event (under common law trademark, and possibly state law).
