mental competence in the elderly

my father in law is the victim of a scam he has been shown articles from the state department but refuses to believe it applies to his current situation even tho what is happening to him fits the article 100% what can we do to get an involuntary commitment for 72 hours he has already been taken for thousands of dollars and is neglecting to eat and take his medications because he is so taken with this woman on the internet. the scam is one from ghana

You cannot get a 72 hour mental health hold from the information that you have provided, but your father-in-law may be a candidate for a temporary or permanent conservatorship (having someone appointed to handle his money). This is particulary true since you say he is not eating or taking his medications.

This requires an attorney experienced in this area. Our office regularly advises families in guardianships and conservatorships.
