do you have to be a member of the bar in CA to fight a trail?

I presume you meant to say "trial", not "trail". You can represent yourself in a trial and in pre-trial proceedings, but only lawyers can represent someone else. Usually those lawyers will be members of the state bar, but lawyers who are licensed in other states can get a court's permission to represent particular clients in particular cases.
