Her sole source of income is her monthly $1579 Social Security, her minimum pmts on her credit cards is just under $1000. Which doesn't leave enough money for living expenses (utilities, food, etc.). My first inclination is a credit help service but, after researching this, here best case scenario would be just under $800/month... which is still unsustainable. Therefore, I think Chapter 7 Bankruptcy is her best option... At age 84, and in a house she wants to stay in until her dying day, she doesn't really care what her credit rating or score is anymore. Do you have any other options for her? How will she be able to pay for a Bankruptcy attorney, etc.? Please help me understand what I can do for her, short of lending her money I don't have.
I agree with my colleague. Many of us offer a half hour no charge consultation which might provide some details on options for assisting your Mom. Do reach out for help from a qualified bankruptcy attorney.
You should consult with a local bankruptcy attorney. Ask them to evaluate if she is "judgement proof" and what they recommend she do.
