Do people convicted of a first-time DUI always lose their drivers licenses automatically?

Agree with the previous response. However, you can obtain a restricted license after 30 days. You will need proof of enrollment in the alcohol program, SR22 proof of insurance, and to pay the license re-issue fee to DMV. If you have a DUI court conviction in a pilot county (Los Angeles, Alameda, Tulare, or Sacramento) you will also need to install an Ignition Interlock Device before you can get your license back.

When someone in California is convicted of a first time DUI, assuming that the blood alcohol level is less than a .20, then it will result in a six month suspension. In alcohol DUI cases, there is also a DMV administrative suspension which can result in a four month administrative suspension independent of the court case.
