My grandfather left me his guns in his will - he died when I was 10. I was supposed to get them when I turned 18. I'm now almost 21 and she said her new husband wants them, but she's willing to get them appraised and give me the money for them. I told her, I'll get them appraised, and if I decide to sell them, I'll let her know. She won't give them to me. What's my recourse?
Your alternative is to file suit. Since that may seem to be an unattractive alternative, you need to hear you mother as to why she doesn't want you to have the guns. Perhaps you can persuade her that you will handle them safely and responsibly. I suspect that the offer to have her new husband buy them has more to do with you than the guns. But, the bottom line is that you effectuate rights by filing suit in court. If she cuts you out of her will after you sue her, do not be surprised.
If the estate is in probate court, contact the Court in writing and explain the situation.
