Is there anything me and my co workers can do about this? Our store was shut because of the Corona Virus. Starbucks is refusing to pay any partners disaster pay unless they are sick with the virus. They are telling us we have to goto other stores and cover shifts there, putting us at risk for exposure. We cannot pay our bills, and some of us have sick family members. Starbucks has paid disaster pay for things such as hurricanes, etc. There are over 60 of us from different states being effected by this.
There is no requirement in any law for an employer to pay "disaster pay", unless there is an employment contract between the worker and employer that requires it.
That could change as the situation changes for the worse.
As far as treating all employees equally, it makes sense that an employer would want employees who are sick to stay home while still requiring those who are not sick to continue to work, even though it might expose the worker to customers who might be ill. While the Covid-19 is deadlier than the flu, the flu is also a killer and yet service employees continue to serve customers who might be ill with the flu, or other contagious diseases.
This is a terrible situation for every one.
