What is my legal liability if I provide some financial assistance for my aunt's healthcare/long term care in California?

None. You don't owe her a duty of support. You can, however, be on the hook for burial or cremation expenses if you are the closest next of kin.

However, if she's in need of assistance, it makes more sense to help her qualify for long term care benefits under Medi-Cal and perhaps shelter her home, if she has one, from the cost of her care.
