How much of a source can I legally use without having to secure reproduction rights?

This is too fact-dependent to answer without MUCH more information. You should consult a lawyer directly for a more thorough review of the situation.

General rule is: NONE (0%)

UNLESS, the use is a parody (in which case you may use only the minimum amount required to 'conjure up' the original in the mind of the viewer/listener)

OR

UNLESS your use is a "Fair Use", which involves a complicated analysis using a 4-part test. Have a look at wikipedia.com for more information about this, or call me for a consultation.
