Jr High cap and gown

My child's Jr. High is requiring a cap and gown for their promotion to High School. If my child does not wear a cap and gown they will not allow my child to participate in the promotion ceremony. I think the cap and gown are not appropriate for this event since my child still has 4 years of school left. Is there any thing I can do?

Re: Jr High cap and gown

Hmmm. I think this is probably discretionary with the individual school. You should call your school board and ask if there is a "policy" with regard to this practice. There may be a freedom of expression issue here; i.e., does a student have the right not to wear graduation garb? Schools certainly have the right and duty to impose and enforce "dress codes". Possibly this extends to what is worn at a graduation, e.g., a student couldn't wear a bathing suit. My guess is that the school does have this right.
