Our landlord told us yesterday that the City of Ontario, CA said they must tear down the bachelor apt connected to my house because there were no permits filed when it was built over 30 years ago,
My 71 year old mother lives in this apt and it would be a great hardship on her as she would have no where to live.
The current owners were not aware of this when they bought the property a couple years ago.
Now, not only has this already caused great stress for my mom, the owners will lose income.
A friend was telling us about a ''grandfather clause'' or ''grandfather in''. My question is: would this be of any help to stop the city from taking away my mother's home and income from the owners? If so, how would we or the owners go about using it?

You have the right to appeal the decision if you take timely action, based upon the 'grandfather' theory that it has been there so long. Feel free to contact me for legal help if you decide to do so.
