The chances of a mistake were a lot higher before police started using laser guns. The old radar gun's signal spread out the further away the signal traveled. Lasers do not spread but it is still possible it locked on to the wrong car. You may want to contest it, or better yet hire a traffic attorney. They aren't that expensive and he can review the facts and tell you what your chances of success will be.

RADAR is a shotgun and can be misread when there are larger or closer vehicles than the target vehicle in its spread. It also requires calibration; this is frequently a successful line of attack on RADAR tickets.

LIDAR, which your Valentine would also alert on, is VERY specific; like a rifle shot. It also requires calibration and training, but is far less susceptible to false hits.

You may want to confirm which you were clocked by, and read about the shortfalls of each.

You can contest the ticket but you will have a hard time with it. Testimony about your radar detector is not going to be convincing evidence against the officer's radar. However, you have a much better chance if you hire a lawyer to assist you at your trial.

It is certainly possible. If you believe you did not commit the infraction you should request a contested hearing and present your evidence. To present your case in the best light and in accordance with the infraction rules and evidence rules, you may want to consult an attorney who specializes in contesting infractions in your area.
