I am an Italian citizen and I am in the USA on ESTA which expires on April 24th. My flight back home is on the 15th of April, but considering the current situation in Italy with COVID-19 I am afraid to go back. Is there any way to extend the ESTA and to stay in the States for the next 1-3 months without being punished and not being able to come back in the future? I don't want to have the re-entry in the states to be blocked for me.
Thanks a lot.

Salve Marina,
You should be able to receive a 30 day (now likely more?) "Satisfactory Departure" stamp from the "Deferred Inspections" Office of the US Customs And Border Protection (CBP) downtown and/or Miami International Airport. They are currently closed to the public but should eventually reopen. Check their website and stay otherwise tuned. A dopo.
As my colleagues suggest you may be able to obtain satisfactory departure from the US customs and border protection at the port of entry.
You may want to take my colleague's suggestion.
Yes, you may be able to request something called Satisfactory Departure from Customs and Border Protection Officers. The procedure will depend on the port of entry you used to enter the United States.
