I am renting a room in a 5 bedroom townhouse and signed a year lease with 3 other people. Two people who were going to rent the room before I showed up, have paid the first/last months rent plus security deposit (because they intended to live there but then bailed out). Now they are asking me to pay them the money that they already paid the landlord. Am I legally obligated to pay them there money if I moved in on completely separate terms then what they dealt with?

Unless you are being given the benefit of their deposits and your agreement required you to somehow to be responsible for their deposits, then you have no obligation.

First their right to return of their deposits with the landlord are between them and the landlord. Unless your agreement requires you to reimburse them again their issue is with the landlord not you.

Good luck
