If the elderly person owns the house, or owned the house within five years of applying for Medicaid, then the house could be in jeopardy. Medicaid will usually only pay for a nursing home after most of an elderly person's assets have already been liquidated and applied to that person's care. If an elderly person enters a nursing home, without any expectation of returning to her residence, then the house will probably have to be sold to pay for such care if that person has no other assets. There are things that you can do to protect some of the proceeds of the sale of the house. Feel free to give me a call to discuss this. I won't charge for the phone call.
