I am a salaried chef making 50k annually working for MMI Hotel Group. Due to the coronavirus, all hourly employees have been laid off as well as most salary. Leaving me and a handful of people here to maintain the property. They now are going to close the resort temporarily starting tomorrow. We will not get payed or given any compensation during that time. As of today they are taking 20% of all salary pay. This will be in effect until August. Is that legal? None of us have ever heard of a company doing that. We all have and will be working more than ever and making less.
Yes it is legal. You can try to negotiate for more money. They need for you to stay. Also they will need you to normal pay when they reopen, which will hopefully be before August. But there's no law; I am just encourage to negotiate on your own behalf.
You never heard of a company cutting wages? That is not too common in the last 50 years since we've been in boom times since the 1980's for the most part---but it is not illegal---unless you are working under a contract. A half a loaf of bread is better than nothing in tough times....take your employment documents to a local attorney (employment law) and see if you have any basis to complain or mount a defense to a pay cut. I wish you the very best and hope that tourism returns to SSI ASAP.
