AWOL Called to Active Duty

I was in the National Guard, but I went AWOL shortly after basic training. I have been away for nearly 3 years now, but recently recieved a Mobilization Packet calling me to active duty. What exactly is going on here and what happens if I don't report? Why would the Army try to call somebody to actice duty when they are AWOL?

Re: AWOL Called to Active Duty

Your initial enlistment obligated you for eight (8) years; with a portion of that being subject to recall even if your "drill" time had expired. If you do not show up for the mobilization, a DA Form 4187 will be signed by the commanding officer and you will be listed as a Deserter.

Deserters are subject to arrest; a federal arrest warrant automatically enters in every state and any license, including a driver's license, can be suspended. Local police departments receive money from the Department of the Army for apprehending Deserters and are reimbursed 100% of the cost of holding Deserters in custody.
