legal resposability
On a number of times I paid the rent on my brothers apartment with a personal trust account check in my name. My brother was the only person listed on the rental agreement. He has sense moved out of the apartment leaving a $1000.00 cleaning cost. I just recieved a letter from the apartment management company demanding payment from me.
Am I liable, this is in California

Not unless you are somehow responsible for his support, or he is a beneficiary of the trust. Sounds to me as though the property manager has simply made a record of the address on the checks. Review the subject with them; don't let it fester and get out of control, or you may end up defending a small-claims suit needlessly.
