Protecting my literary work

I am writing a childrens book. While writing it, and also after it is finished, what should I do to protect my work? Initially, my idea was to have the book professionally bound for my younger neices and nephews as one of their Christmas Gifts. Something they could keep and pass down for years to come. Whether I officially have it published or not, I feel inclined to take some action to protect the literary work. Please advise what steps should be taken? And, how long it takes?

Re: Protecting my literary work

You should file for federal copyright protection for the book; it doesn't cost very much and should provide sufficient protection for you.
