Im new to my workplace and a coworker IM’d “hello. I just like to get to know all of the new workers.” We exchanged back and fourth about our school and work histories but he asked abruptly “what’s the dirtiest thing you’ve done? Not PG.” And I said nothing. He then proceeded to say “ok me first. I f**** my ex on the q train while passer bys we’re looking.. I had her face pressed up against the window. It was the most erotic moment of my life”. He then proceeded to call me beautiful out of nowhere which I ignored. And I brushed it off and tried to be polite so I (stupidly!) added onto it saying “I can top you. My fiancée was my college professor. We fell in love after his class ended.” He then asked if we had sex on campus and I said “No. Parking lot.” And realized I was VERY deep in. So I stopped talking to him as he kept messaging me saying “oh don’t leave me hanging like that.” Now these exchanges were, unknown to me, saved into the computer which my manager found and ignored.
Difficult to fully and properly answer, context is everything, but briefly, sexual harassment can include: Unwelcome sexual advances; Offensive remarks about a person’s gender; Requests for sexual favours; Physical intimidation. It all depends on the context the remarks are made and if they continue. Often, sexual harassment in the workplace is more of a civil matter than a criminal matter.
