Evidence is impounded by the states attorney's office for 90 days after a trial or plea of guilty. The reason for this is because the defendant has 30 days to withdraw his plea of guilty and if that is denied, 30 days after the denial to appeal. If this were to happen, the evidence could be recovered from the impounded location.
