I deployed to Iraq in august and put my phone contract on hold. They still charged me without me realizing. My friend mentioned that they shouldnt be able to do that and since it dose effect my credit that I should contact a lawyer.

Call your JAG office and ask them to help you with this. I am sure once the phone company hears the story, they will rethink their position. If that doesn't work, a call to your local tv station or newspaper should do the trick.
