copyright question
I would like to produce knit hats based on patterns in a book that I purchased and then sell them at a holidy bazaar. Do I need to request approval from the pattern designer?

Generally speaking, knits and designs of fashion items are not exactly in the same category of patent processing as it may be with other actual objects. I am unsure if you are a sole proprietor, LLC, or similar.
It may be suggested that you contact an attorney for this matter.
