Can I sue my college for negligence?

I was ready to start this fall semester in Los Angeles, when I found out only 13 days prior (9/13) I may not be able to attend because the university neglected to ever inform me that I was no given housing.

When asked why I was never informed through email or mailed, the phone rep said they'd been having problems with their email. They didn't even bother to call me. Then they directed me to a craigslist link among others as their off-campus housing solution.

Really, a "craigslist" link is their go-to solution.

They won't refund the full deposit I've already paid, without taking a substantial chunk of it as a "fee."

I may have to withdraw from this entire semester because of their negligence.

I'm calling them to try to get answers and help from someone knowledgeable, other than a disinterested student working the phone, but they say "you're on your own" and treat me like I was the one who did something wrong.

The Director of Housing was called by the UAAC (Advisement) on my behalf and he denies his staff were unable to help me, that it was "out of ordinary" that I was never contacted, and that I should speak to a student again to answer my questions.

I did, asked the student to speak to him and he refused.

They said someone else would call me back today and she hasn't.

They were fully available to take my money, but not around once they have it.

It's not right, they've pulled out the lynch pin of this whole semester, and now I fear my future commission as a US Marine Corps Officer is at stake because I may not be able to attend my training this summer, which is contingent on my completing junior year.

I understand the university may have not "breached any legal obligations" with me, but still, here I am, no call or email, no housing, left robbed and severely disadvantaged many years into the future. I don't want to let them get away with stuff like this.

They're not even *trying* to help, they're just denying everything and transferring me to different people who refuse to speak to me.

They've taken my money and left me to drown; I've slipped through a crack that wasn't even supposed to be there.

It's disgraceful that this is the playbook of the Californian public college educational system.

Plan of action?

Hello,

I'm trying to get some info on an issue I have related to a Jr. college I've been attending. I've had both teachers in the degree program I'm pursuing, and the dean of the dept. tell me, off the record, that they thought that the school had allowed the relevancy of their I.T. program to deteriorate over the years to the point that it is nearly worthless to any potential employer. I filed a complaint with the school about this issue and to my surprise; they determined that it should be eliminated. (Not only were the courses irrelevant, but the instructors was awful as well) I was also thanked along the way by the schools VP and HR director. I was told that my complaint was their motivation for inquiry into the program.

So, now I'm stuck with a worthless degree. (And believe me, worthless isnt just my opinion, I can prove it.) Through relentless pursuit, I've been able to get the schools HR director to offer me the choice of either returning my tuition or have the school pay for an online course. Both choices are unacceptable to me.( a year and a half of my life is worth more than a couple of grand and online education is the next great con in the scam that is the American educational system.) Last year when the school was going through its accreditation review I had an opportunity to speak with the person who was heading up the review committee. She also happens to be chancellor of the Jr College in Merced California. She said she was appalled by what I had to tell her about the conduct of the school. Her advice to me was to go through the schools chain of command and at every step of the way, ask that the school hire an adjunct professor to teach me the things I should have learned had the school had a decent program to begin with. I also remember her using the words like disgusted when I told her about how misleading the schools catalog was for pretending to offer IT courses that haven't made available in the schools semester class schedule going all the way back to the year 2000. (If I remember correctly, over 30% of the IT courses in their catalog had never been offered for at least the last 13 years. Why isnt this false advertising? I chose to pursue this degree in good part based on the courses that were listed in their catalog.)

Not being a lawyer, I obviously have no idea whether they violated the law or not. But they sure as hell acted with an incredibly amount apathy for allowing the program to fall in such a sad state of disrepair. And then with an incredible amount of arrogance and complete disregard for their obligation to serve the interests of the community they claim to represent. Ive read articles related to educational malpractice and how difficult it has been to prove. But, every article that Ive read on the subject also states by the author that they feel the tide is beginning to turn on this issue as well. I hope a sharp attorney sees that my particular case may be that chink in their armor that theyve been looking for.

I was placed on academic probation in January of this year due to not meeting academic requirements the year before because my GPA was at a 1.27 cumulative because I lost my grandparent thy year which rely affected both school and my health. After receiving a 3.3 GPA this spring and moving my cumulative up to a 2.17, showing great improvement, I was put on academic suspension due to withdrawing from some summer classes in order to change my major. The reason for my suing is because these classes I withdrew from were firstly mentioned to my academic advisor even before withdrawal as I made it clear that my math class which I had to take for my chemistry major is very difficult and therefore I would like to change my major to health sciences so I can drop both the math and physics classes related to the chemistry and instead pick up health science related classes and the academic advisor said yes. Now I am being suspended due to his misleading and this has caused me to lose both my education and work because I am an international student and work on campus. The academic advisor seems not to be taking any blame for this and it is affecting my education.

I sent mails to the academic affairs officer who decided to put me on suspension, two other academic affairs officers and also the president of the school. However, the president decided to have someone look at if but I am currently not in the country as I traveled for my great grandfathers funeral and would need to come in on my I-20 which I can only do if the situation is resolved which s why I need immediate help.
