When you have a dispute with someone and legal action is threatened, you most definitely want that person to have an address where papers (the lawsuit) can be served on you. Otherwise, the opposing party may pursue other less reliable (from your perspective) types of service. What you don't want is a situation where the other party winds up with a default judgment against you. A nasty surprise, indeed.
A major exception is domestic violence or other types of no-contact situations, in this case you will want to seek help from an attorney or an agency that assists people fleeing domestic violence situations.
One big advantage of hiring a lawyer, is that the lawyer receives service on your behalf. This is a nice benefit, particularly when you don't want the other party visiting, calling, mailing or what have you where you live or work.
