Complications after ESI injection

I received a lumbar ESI 4 months ago to calm down several irritated discs at the hospital where I work. A fellow performed this injection, without the attending present, and punctured my spinal column & nerves during the procedure. I complained during & after injection of severe pain & numbness. The next day I awoke with a fever, headache, dizziness, & nausea. They placed me on a high dose of erythromycin for 1 week (20000mg/day) which caused me to become toxic and contract campylobacter. When I finished the antibiotic I became worse. The drs who gave me the injection refused to continue treating me & told me to go to my primary care doc. The primary care doc & other docs at this hosp also refused and/or drug their feet w/treatment. I eventually went to another hospital. I now have an ongoing CSF leak, which was treated 2x w/blood patch, bladder incontinence, peripheral neuropathy in both feet, ongoing campylobacteriosis-causing chronic fever, nausea, diarrhea, joint pain & inflammation and long-term bowel problems. I can't work. I've been on short-term disability for nearly 5 months & will lose my job if I don't return in 6 weeks. I'll also lose my medical insurance. Can anyone help me?

Re: Complications after ESI injection

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. Truthfully, there's no way to give you a complete answer without having a nurse and expert physician review your medical records closely. What you described could be the result of normal unfortunate complications from lumbar injections, but could also be the result of malpractice. Their failure to follow up promptly also raises questions.

My firm (and I personally) have handled numerous medical malpractice cases all the way from filing suit through trial, and you can find some descriptions of representative cases on our website. If you'd like a free consultation, please contact me at the email/phone/address below. If not me, I strongly encourage you to contact an experienced medical malpractice attorney soon so they can review your case and hopefully give you some answers.
