Is there a statute that gives the police the authority to search without a warrant?

Re: search without a warrant

I don't handle criminal law, but there are circumstances when the police can search without a warrant.

For example, if the police saw you knife someone, and chased you to a house, they could follow you into the house. They could conduct a very limited search, for other people and for weapons, so that the police are not injured.
