Can an attorney legally ask for a courtroom to be cleared without cause? Can a member of the general public be precluded from observing a hearing without cause?

Yes. In addition to trial rules regarding excluding witnesses, or sealing cases, EDCR 5.02(a) (a court rule) provides that Hearings may be private," with some exceptions; the purpose of the rule is to provide parties the option of having private hearings on sensitive family or domestic issues. Similar rules have been challenged in California, but remain in place here.
