I reside in the State of Georgia. I was married on March 27,010. I am currently using my husband's last name but I would like to change that to my maiden name, hyphen, husband's last name. (Example: Smalls-Bostick.) Do I need to submit a name change to do this in the State of Georgia? When I went to court to have my marriage license filed, the clerk told me this could not be done then. Please advise. Thanks.

You can ask to change your name for no fee at the time you get your marriage license, but not after the fact.

Since you waited, the change requires a court case in Superior Court. More bad news: On May 12, 2010 the state raised court filing fees for such cases from about $80-$90 to about $215. There also would be a publication fee (usually $80) and whatever fee your lawyer charges for the case. Feel free to call me for details.
